Firmicutes en Bacteroidetes zijn de meest voorkomende vertegenwoordigers van de darmbacteriën. Firmicutes kunnen niet-verteerbare vezels splitsen en opslaan voor “slechte tijden”. Hierdoor geeft het lichaam meer energie wanneer dat nodig is. Het aantal Bacteroidetes neemt toe zodra het lichaamsgewicht afneemt. Daarom kan men conclusies trekken over hoe goed het caloriegebruik in het lichaam is. Wanneer je gewicht verliest door een caloriearm dieet, neemt deze verhouding meestal ook af.
Je kan het aantal Bacteroidetes wijzigen door je dieet aan te passen. Bacteroideten geven de voorkeur aan bijvoorbeeld vezelrijke diëten zoals lijnzaad, peulvruchten en volle granen.
