Vitamine B6

De NBPF3 gen helpt bij het reguleren van de productie van een enzym dat vitamine B6 afbreekt. Van personen met genetische variaties in dit gen is aangetoond dat ze een lager vitamine B6-gehalte hebben.

Dit is waarschijnlijk het gevolg van een efficiëntere afbraak van vitamine B6. Vitamine B6 is belangrijk voor de immuunfunctie, neurologische functie en vorming van rode bloedcellen.

Het is ook vereist voor een proces genaamd methylatie, dat fungeert als een moleculaire schakelaar om genen aan en uit te zetten. Verstoring van de methylering kan leiden tot verhoogde niveaus van een molecuul, homocysteïne genaamd, dat in verband is gebracht met verschillende medische aandoeningen.
